UD’s Carvel Center holds annual research and extension field tours for Delaware’s agriculture community
The University of Delaware Carvel Research and Education Center in Georgetown invited the agriculture community to attend Agronomic, Fruit and Vegetable Crops and Poultry tours on Thursday, Aug. 14, 2025.
A longstanding tradition held each August at UD’s Georgetown campus, Carvel’s tours allow University of Delaware’s Extension researchers and specialists to report their findings to farmers, certified crop advisors, agriculture industry professionals, and Cooperative Extension colleagues from neighboring regions.
Examining field conditions in real time provides agriculture stakeholders with valuable information for planning and managing crops. The event offers an opportunity for interns, UD undergraduate and graduate students, to present their research efforts under the mentorship of UD faculty and Extension specialists.
More than 200 attended the tours.
Delaware’s agriculture industry is responsible for nearly $13 billion annually. Agriculture provides more than 138,000 direct and affiliated jobs in Delaware. These are powerful numbers for a small state, and Extension plays a significant role in keeping those numbers growing.
“The depth and diversity of research happening at this facility is something we’re incredibly proud of, and we’re eager to share these efforts with farmers across Delmarva,” said James Adkins, interim director of the Carvel Center. “Whether you grow corn and soybeans, raise poultry, or produce fresh market vegetables, there’s likely a project underway here that speaks directly to your interests.”
