UD Cooperative Extension 4-H initiative aims to combat vaping among middle school students

A team from the University of Delaware Cooperative Extension 4-H program has been working to educate middle school students about the significant dangers of vaping through a structured series of lessons.

Recognizing the importance of building knowledge over time, the team have created three distinct curriculums specifically designed for 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. Information presented each year builds on what students have previously learned, creating a more comprehensive understanding of the risks associated with vaping.

Lessons delve into what vaping is, the harmful substances contained in vape devices, and the negative health consequences that can result. Since the start of the school year, the initiative has educated more than 950 students.

Beyond the traditional classroom setting, the 4-H program has developed innovative ways to engage younger students in learning about vaping prevention.

Last summer, the team introduced an escape room filled with interactive puzzles and challenges for youth aged 8-12, encouraging teamwork and problem-solving while delivering factual information about vaping.

Building on their success, the team is designing a new interactive escape room for the summer of 2025.

These diverse educational efforts aim to empower young people with the knowledge and skills necessary to resist the temptation to vape and make informed choices that support their long-term health and well-being.
